House was built in 1964 and remained a residential home during this time period.
The owner of the house at this time applied for a rezoning of the property (case Z-15-06) but it was voided before it went to the Planning Commission review.
The bank foreclosed on the house and was eventually sold to RD Construction Inc. on February 22nd, 2016. The house was torn down on June 27th, 2016.
RD Construction Inc. applied for a rezoning of the lot (case Z-3-17). The certified recommendation from the Raleigh Planning Commission stated the rezoning case was inconsistent with the 2030 Comprehensive Plan as well as the Future Land Use Map. The rezoning application was ultimately withdrawn by RD Construction Inc.
RD Construction Inc. applied a second time for a rezoning of the lot (case Z-57-20) from R-4 w/NCOD to OX-3-PL-CU w/o NCOD. The applicants intend to put a large daycare housing up to 188 kids onto the 1.25 acre lot.
After discussing the topic at 3 separate meetings, the Planning Commission voted 5 to 3 in favor of a recommendation of rezoning.
On Saturday, May 22nd, there was a Brookhaven Block Party/Rally on Rembert Drive with over 150 people in attendance. CBS-17 covered the event here.
On Tuesday, June 1st, the City Council voted unanimously 8-0 to deny the rezoning request. The neighborhood will now work on discussing an acceptable use for both Brookhaven and the property owner.
